Shadows Over Innistrad Prerelease

Jeremy

So the Shadows Over Innistrad prereleases were this weekend, and I went to mine this evening. I didn't do to well in the competition, but I had quite a bit of luck with boosters: Avacyn, Nahiri, and Sigarda, all in one pool. So, I pretty obviously went Naya, and went 1-2 drop.

Research:

I did do something productive, though: I did some research into sealed archtypes and good cards.

Archtypes:

White/Blue control. Sometimes splashing black for creatures and removal, this archtype can deal with pretty much anything through cards like Just the Wind and win cons in large fliers and Invocation of Saint Traft.

Red/Green aggro. All of the werewolves defines this, and is quite good with combat tricks and anti-control cards like Hermit of the Natterknolls and more aggro red cards like Kessig Forgemaster and Breakneck Rider. This is a very versatile deck, taking anywhere from 5-10 to kill.

Green/White Humans. This is a great tribal deck, and I saw aggro to synergistic builds.

Blue/Black Skulk. Not being able to block is terrible for any draft deck, and playing against the skulk decks is terrible for most decks. With their best cards being 1-3/X's, like Rancid Rats and Pale Rider of Trostad, this deck is straight-up U/B aggro.

Mono Black or Black/Red Vampires. This seems great. Playing an essentially 3/2 Flying for 2, Heir Of Falkenrath, and with some support from the zombies, this deck is another great tribal/combo/aggro deck.

Black Zombies. This is a really annoying deck to play, just because of one common: Sanitarium Skeleton. It comes back, it blocks pretty well, it comes back again.

These are the main ones, if you saw anything else, post below!

Failed Archetypes:

I only saw one, and this has been a trend from OGW and SOI: Mono-white equipment. There just aren't enough equipment to make it good! Why wizards? We are also waiting for those other swords, you know. Now would be the perfect time!

What was your prerelease like? What were your bombs?

B/R vampires can also be BR madness, really :P

Sorry about your record, but those are nice pulls! Avacyn is the one card I want the most.

Blue-Red tempo/madness is something else I saw. Blue has great support spells, and can benefit from the red cards that make you discard.

I saw very few people go three colours. Not much mana fixing in this format.

went 0-2 at mine. my card draws were not anything to write home about. i had to much of a hard time getting my deck going as far as gettig either mana out or spells i need. i think 1 person out of the nine players made a three color deck. i kinda noticed thatthere's not very much mana ramping in this set.

I went to two prereleases with my boyfriend and friend in hopes of either pulling an avaycn or the new Sorin, and found that Esper control was fairly strong. Was it popular? No, but it did it's job well. B/W fliers did well and so did B/R/G werewolves and vampires did well. I saw that Rakdos vampires were strong and had went 0-4 before I changed my deck colors from Mardu to Jund. Went to the prerelease and got a To the Slaughter, Asylum Visitor, Promo Sage of Ancient Lore, Burn from Within, Flameblade Angel, Engulf the Shore, Promo Fevered Visions (along with a non-promo one), Nahiri, Foritified Village, Foreboding Ruins, Drownyard Temple, and a Port Town. Overall, I made back the money spent on going to the preleases, and it was fun.

@Jeremy Honestly, I don't play sealed a lot since I don't have the skills to understand how to build a deck on the fly, but it wasn't bad. I had a lot of fun and I can see it being fun for others who enjoy sealed. Personally, I was looking for things that would go into EDH decks and decks I currently own.

Golbez and I both went R/B Madness.

That skeleton is perfect for pitching over and over for madness costs or to sacrificing to that lifelink one drop vampire that grows for each sac.

Golbez had the better bombs but I had the better synergy and early game. :)  Ended up going head to head in the final round!

@Aurian That skeleton is AMAZING. I cannot say enough. This guy managed to give it flying over and over again, chumping my Avacyn. 5 turns in a row.

@MindlessARTIST I'm assuming you're going for more of an Aggro version? I've seen quite a few R/W/B or R/W control decks, usually with Gisela or Zurgo as commander.

@Jeremy I run the new R/W commander, Kalemme, Disciple of Iroas. 3/3 vigilance and double strike, each creature spell cmc 5 or more gives her counters, which increases her power and toughness. I have jacked her up to a 11/11 and killed people quite easily,
