"Nothing here is worth anything"

A couple of weeks ago one of my wife's friend asked if were interested in her husbands old Magic collection.  They don't play anymore and just want to get rid of the cards, they had "sold everything worth value about 10 years ago" and didn't want anything in return; just for us to take the cards off their hands.  So they met up a few days ago and I had a chance to go through most of the collection.

In the smaller boxes there were some build decks and mostly cards from Kamigawa.  Some older cards, and best of all old lands.  I'm a sucker for old lands especially ice covered lands.

One of my favorite things about being a Pauper player is you find all sorts of playable cards in what most people consider bulk or throw away cards.  After I went through the first decks and smaller boxes, it was time to dive into the bigger box.

In these boxes there were 4th and 5th editions, Revised, Alliance, The Dark, Ice Age and Visions.  There cards were actually sorted halfway decent.  Really happy with some of the cards found here :)

Hey Lasraik, beautiful lot (the MtG branded box alone is amazing)

Honestly, this is the kind of thing I like to find the most! I love going through old cards :)

Yeah I love going through old collections.  Something about hunting for those fun, interesting or expensive cards someone wanted to throw away

Damn! Time to build about 50 more casual decks? :D

Old cards looks so much more beautiful to me...

About 50 Pauper decks :D

The old artwork is so much more pleasing than the newer artwork.  It has more character and more of a by hand feeling, the art now is leaning more towards computer generated and doesn't feel as personal (if that makes sense)

That is a fantastic haul. You have my congrats.

Take a day and really sweep through them with a fine tooth comb and a copy of the Reserved List. You'll be surprised with what you find. I did that with some boxes I have laying around my house, and came out with a nice big stack of reserved list cards.

That's a good idea to look for Reserved List cards.  Going to look through them again next week and sort them now that I have a better idea what to look out for.

Yeah especially with the buyouts going on, who knows when those $.50 commons turn into $20 commons because some dude decided to buy them all out.

Also btw, if it's white-bordered, it's not reserved list. Easy way to tell for the older stuff.

Also, if's a common, it's not reserved list. They cut it down to rares only years ago. Some white-bordered cards are on there though- ABUR cards not reprinted in 4th edition were included (e.g.dual lands, Wheel of Fortune, Demonic Tutor before uncommons were removed from the list)

Oh OK I was wondering for cards like Veteran Bodyguard is on the Reserved List but printed multiple times, some white bordered (Revised).

That makes sense, since duals and the others you listed were on the RS.

But for most not ABUR cards, if they're white bordered, there's a high chance they aren't on the list for the most part.

I didn't pay that much attention to the Reserved List before, other than the really popular cards on it.  But now that I'm going through and finding cards on the list that at first glance I thought were either OK or bad cards, I'm surprised many of the cards made it on the list.  They might want to revisit the list eventually and remove some of the cards that were oppressive at the time but just OK or bad now.  It's like putting Siege Rhino on the list back when it was in Standard, now years later it's still a good card but nothing oppressive.
