Covid-19 and you

31 posts in this topic

How's it affecting you. Most countries are stating they are either x weeks ahead or x weeks behind everyone else.

Here in the UK, we're about 2 weeks behind Italy and a fair bit of mainland Europe. We started working from home at the beginning of last week and locked down Tuesday of this week. People are now being stopped by police if it's suspected they are out without a good reason. Although shopping and exercise are good reasons - so not so strict. If you don't have a good reason, you need an exemption certificate for being a key-worker from your employer. I'm waiting for mine, as I'm facilitating remote working for University staff, which means distributing laptops to staff at home.

8pm this evening all of the UK stood outside their houses to applaud NHS workers. My wife is a acute Nurse, so went to be applauded directly by our neighbours. So nice.

Microsoft Teams has been a real godsend (for most of the world i'd guess), it's allowing me to work vary much as i would have done at the Uni, and i'm an antisocial bastard who hates meeting other human beings f2f at the best of times. Many are using Zoom too, but i heard Zoom had some ugly technical difficulties last week.

I'm hearing my team saying they're suffering from isolation, missing their teams mates and the usual banter.

From a personal point of view, and for now at least, i'm absolutely loving it. It feels like Christmas every day. I'm at home every day working next to my new server, which is humming away next to me, waiting to be tidied up and put away.

My baby!

My state (Ohio) was one of the first one to go on lockdown.  Kids have been off for a couple of weeks and most everything has been closed for 10+ days.

I worked from home anyway.  I am well stocked for the long haul.  Even still, I went for a walk yesterday and to the store ... just go get out of the house.

Our offshore staff in India is going through lockdown now so we have lost over half our staff.  Meaning all non essential project work has ground to a halt.  Its kind of nice as I am having less meetings, less changes going in so less stuff breaking.

I spend 3 or 4 days a week at my place and 3 or 4 days a week at my girlfriends ... yes, found someone and its working out extremely well.

While I miss my friends and it sucks ass that there are no sports, I am spending less money, I am dealing with less BS at work, I don't have to drive all over to various events and I get to spend half a week with someone that really wants to be with me ... what more could I ask for, life is good.

My response is off topic in another thread.  But then, who would expect anything else?

My fault! :D

Well my state has not gone on lockdown, but no groups larger than 10.  Although most people are staying in, making the drive to work nice.  Yea, I still have to go into work.  It is a skeleton staff of 3-4 security and me locked in the surveillance room.  So at least I am not around alot of people.   I am also very anti social so the staying at home is right up my alley.  The kids have been out of school for just over 2 weeks now and we get the online school work done in a couple of hours so they have the rest of the day.  The wife is out of work but so far she hasn't gone crazy being home with the kids 24/7.

Glad to hear everyone is safe, and Pas you better be giving your wife the royal treatment.  Anyone in the medical field in these times deserves it.

New Mexico shut down pretty fast, we only had a handful of cases before the Governor issued a stay at home order.  No groups larger than 5 and only essential travel. They aren't pulling people over to check, yet.

But thankfully they encourage small household groups to go for a walk or ride your bike.  So I'm still able to ride my bike and get out a little bit.  I'm considered essential at work, so nothing has really changed there.  It's the gubment, so of course there is no plan if someone gets sick and everyone gets it.  They are just crossing their fingers nobody gets it.

Starting to get a little stir crazy, it's just weird everything being shut down.  It's unfortunate for those people who have lost their jobs or businesses.  Things will change pretty drastically because of this, I think more companies will have people working from home instead of paying for office space.

We're finding that working from home is inefficient and slow compared to working together in the office.  We don't really have enough capacity for as many people as we do using VPN access to the network.  And some of our design software doesn't run well over VPN connections (e.g., Civil 3D AutoCAD).  But we are still moving forward if at a snail's pace.  That's gubmint fer ya.

Probably doesn't help that everyone is online doing stuff all day, every day.  I'd like to see how much the traffic for PornHub has spiked over the last few weeks

We have run into that.  I am dealing with user performance issues all the time now.  Normal people (read non technical folks) don't seem to understand their wifi+Netflix+YouTube=slow speeds.

I know Netflix and YouTube have degraded their picture to cut bandwidth in some counties.  WebEx has issues at the top of the hour and asks users to limit video.  Everyone is having bandwidth capacity and speed issues now and it will only increase as more folks get set up from home.

I am actually trying to order take out because of this.  Want to help our local businesses and also make sure we have the good places open when this is finally over.

Just have to wonder ... when do we give the all clear?  The only solution is enough people have to get sick for this to stop.  And if we are slowing the spread, we are dragging that out.  Not sure what the answer is, but what is the all clear criteria?

Funnily enough she was treating someone who tested positive on Sunday, so we've agreed between us to try and be sensible about personal contact. Just keeping a bit of distance when there's not need to be physically close.

This might help. It's a great resource developed by a neighbouring Uni.

That tracker is pretty cool.  And I don't believe a single number coming out of China.

I'm all about supporting small businesses and ordering take out, but we're getting mixed messages.  Don't touch the Amazon package from the delivery driver without gloves.  Throw the box away immediately and wash your hands after.  But have a stranger make your food and eat it.

Heat from cooking will kill it.  And just make sure to transfer the food to clean containers once home and then wash hands before eating.  Also if the container is microwavable then you can just nuke them for 30 sec to kill the germs.  Takes a little more time and effort but if done right it is safe.  Just don't forget which hand touched what...

Tomorrow Mount Pleasant SC (Charleston) goes on "lockdown". The police have begun to stop people at the 3 mile connector to the beach near my home. Overall it's been pretty quiet and people were already staying home except for essentials. But then there are the knuckleheads who were still flocking to the beaches, thus the mandatory stay at home.

The Kung Flu is not treating me well.

I'm stuck in my house. Now, I may be a gamer but GOD do I hate this. I'd rather be out playing Magic than on Untap or Arena.

I'm slowly starting to get cabin fever, buuuut the good news is that I've been taking walks to clear my head. Just around the neighborhood, our local DQ, etc.

School has been a cluster as well. With corona, our entire campus shut down, and a lot of people were just kinda stuck. My roommate is a classmate and a friend who plays Magic, but he lives in Maryland. I asked my folks a week and a half before we shut down if he could live with us. My parents said yes, as long as he pays rent. And he has.

Overall? This blows. I wish I could be out with my friends and hanging out. Oh well.

Yea have noticed a lot more people out taking walks/bikes.  I am a major introvert so no real change in my routine.  Other than how I shop and no running the kids to sports practice, which has given me more free time to game.  Other than the sickness this would be great.
